Putzmeister vs Cifa – Concrete Pump Comparison

Trailer-mounted concrete pump

In Brief

Putzmeister vs Cifa — the key differences: boom technology (weldable steel on Putzmeister vs Carbotech CFRP on Cifa — lighter, but non-weldable; full section replacement at the Italian factory takes 2–6 weeks), parts availability in Poland (Putzmeister: 1–3 days; Cifa: 5–7 days, imported from Italy), and diagnostic systems (Ergonic more widely available than Cifa Smartronic). Both manufacturers have been in Chinese ownership since 2008–2012. The bottom line: the better pump is the one that is regularly serviced — brand accounts for 20% of the outcome, maintenance for 80%.

Putzmeister vs Cifa – Which Concrete Pump Is Better?

It is a question we hear many times a year — from clients planning a new machine purchase, from companies taking over fleets of used pumps, from operators intrigued by differences in daily operation. The answer is not straightforward, but after 30 years of servicing both brands, we can offer facts rather than opinions.

History and Ownership

Putzmeister (Germany)

  • Founded: 1958, Stuttgart / Aichtal
  • Owner since 2012: Sany Group (China) – one of the world’s leading construction equipment manufacturers
  • Annual sales: ~35,000 machines worldwide
  • Headquarters remain in Germany; production partially relocated to China

Cifa (Italy)

  • Founded: 1928, Senago, near Milan
  • Owner since 2008: Zoomlion (China) – a direct competitor of Sany
  • Annual sales: ~15,000 machines worldwide
  • Production in Italy and China

Both brands have therefore been under Chinese ownership since 2008–2012. This affects parts strategy — components discontinued from European production may be replaced by Chinese-sourced equivalents.

Concrete Pumping System Technology

Feature Putzmeister Cifa
Switching valve S-Valve (EX/RX series) Rock valve (spherical) or S-valve (older series)
Cylinder material Hardened alloy steel (VD) Chrome-nickel hardened steel
Working pressure Up to 130 bar (BSF) Up to 120 bar (K series)
Maximum output Up to 180 m³/h Up to 160 m³/h

S-valve vs rock valve:

The classic Putzmeister S-valve is a rotating pipe that alternates between the outlets of the concrete cylinders. Simple in operation and straightforward to rebuild.

Cifa’s newer models use a rock valve (spherical type) — it works on a similar principle but requires specialist tooling for disassembly and has greater play on cold starts. More durable than an S-valve in the long run, but expensive to rebuild.

Boom Technology

This is the defining difference between the two brands.

Putzmeister – steel:

  • Steel booms manufactured from HB360–HB500 high-strength steel
  • Can be repaired by welding (by a welder certified to EN 1090)
  • Regular NDT inspection required (risk of fatigue cracking)
  • Heavier: a 52 m boom weighs approximately 9–12 tonnes

Cifa Carbotech – carbon fibre:

  • Cifa’s patented design: boom arms made from carbon composite
  • 30–40% lighter than the equivalent steel boom
  • Cannot be repaired by welding — a damaged section must be replaced
  • Lower risk of fatigue cracking (CFRP does not undergo the same fatigue cycle as steel)
  • Expensive in the event of accidental damage: full section replacement at the factory in Italy (high cost, quoted individually)

When Carbotech makes sense:

  • When a company needs a longer reach boom without increasing chassis weight
  • When the risk of boom damage is low (operation without spatial constraints)
  • When a service plan with Cifa or an authorised dealer is in place

When a Putzmeister steel boom is the better choice:

  • When local servicing is critical (Polish or German service provider)
  • When the machine operates in demanding conditions with a higher collision risk

Diagnostic Systems

System Putzmeister Cifa
Name Ergonic Smartronic
Protocol CAN-bus J1939 CAN-bus J1939
Diagnostic tester Ergonic PC (Putzmeister) Smartronic Service Tool (Cifa)
Tester availability At major Polish service providers Less common in Poland

Conclusion: Putzmeister electronic diagnostics are more accessible in Poland. Cifa Smartronic requires service software that is less readily available outside authorised centres.

Parts Availability and Costs

Component Putzmeister Cifa
Rubber pistons From Polish stock (1–3 days) Available, often 5–7 days
Concrete cylinders OEM or Polish-sourced alternatives Mainly imported from Italy
S-valve OEM or rebuilt OEM from Italy or rebuilt
Boom section (damaged) Weld repair (2–5 days) Replacement from Italy (2–6 weeks)
Relative price index 100% (baseline) 100–120%

Which Brand Should You Choose?

Choose Putzmeister if:

  • You need fast, cost-effective servicing in Poland
  • Your fleet operates in tough conditions with a higher collision risk
  • Your service technicians have Putzmeister experience
  • Resale value of used machines in Poland matters to you (Putzmeister holds its residual value better)

Choose Cifa if:

  • You want a longer boom reach from the same chassis
  • You accept lower fatigue-repair risk on the boom (CFRP vs steel)
  • You have access to an authorised Cifa service centre
  • You operate primarily in Western Europe, where Cifa service coverage is stronger

Our experience:

After 30 years of servicing both brands, there is one thing we can say with confidence: the better pump is the one that is regularly serviced. A neglected Putzmeister will underperform a well-maintained Cifa — and vice versa. Brand accounts for 20% of the outcome; servicing accounts for 80%.
