Cifa pump service — Carbotech boom repair, PHS Magnum

In Brief

PHS Magnum has been servicing Cifa concrete pumps for over a decade: Carbotech carbon-fibre booms, spherical valves, hydraulics and CAN-bus control systems. Carbotech sections cannot be welded — when a section cracks, we replace it in full with a unit ordered from Italy (2–6 weeks lead time). Minor repairs and diagnostics are carried out on-site within 200–300 km of Chorula; cylinder reconditioning and valve replacement require the workshop. Ask for a quote. For a technical comparison: Putzmeister vs Cifa.

Cifa — Italian Engineering, Lighter Booms

Cifa SpA (Senago, Italy) is the second-largest concrete pump manufacturer in Europe after Putzmeister. Defining characteristics: lightweight booms via Carbotech technology, a spherical rather than S-valve, and Italian design with a strong focus on operator ergonomics.

PHS Magnum has serviced Cifa machines for over a decade. Our specialisation: full mechanical and hydraulic repairs, coordination of parts orders from Italy, and Carbotech boom section replacement.

Models We Cover

Boom Pumps — K-Series

  • K31L — standard reach (~31 m)
  • K47H, K50L — the most popular and versatile models
  • K60H, K80H — large infrastructure projects: bridges, high-rise

Naming convention: the number indicates the boom’s vertical reach in metres; the suffix L/H denotes construction class (light/heavy-duty).

The Carbotech boom is 30–40% lighter than a steel equivalent, but is sensitive to mechanical impact. Cifa offers a 10-year structural warranty on Carbotech (subject to regular scheduled inspections).

Stationary Line Pumps (no boom)

  • PC, PCL — compact inline models
  • High output pressures (up to 450 bar in certain configurations)
  • Widely used in tunnel and sewer lining work

Truck-Mixer Pumps — Energya / EYTRACK

A hybrid of concrete mixer and pump on one chassis. The Cifa Energya offers an optional hybrid drive for lower emissions. Servicing specifics: the mixer, pump and boom are maintained as a single integrated unit.

Carbotech — Construction Details

The Cifa K-Series boom uses carbon-fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP) for the main boom sections. Mounting brackets, pivots and hydraulic actuators are all steel. Sections are connected by hydraulically operated joints.

Advantages of Carbotech (vs steel boom)

  • Lower weight (30–40%) — greater reach possible for the same outrigger footprint
  • Easier boom manoeuvring (lower moment of inertia)
  • Less inertia — faster, more responsive operation

Disadvantages of Carbotech

  • Welding is not possible — a cracked section must be replaced in its entirety
  • Higher repair cost (full CFRP section replacement — cost depends on section length, quoted individually)
  • Sensitivity to mechanical impact (e.g. the boom striking a structure during manoeuvring)
  • Older Carbotech (>15 years) — UV degradation may require preventive section replacement

Carbotech Section Replacement Procedure (PHS Magnum)

  1. Diagnosis — crack inspection using UV-CT scanning (carried out by a specialist third-party firm)
  2. Order new section from Cifa (Italy) — delivery lead time 2–6 weeks
  3. Remove old section — disconnect hydraulics, control wiring and mounting brackets
  4. Install new section — with hydraulic and position-control calibration
  5. Pressure test and functional trial with test concrete

Spherical Valve — Technical Details

Cifa uses a ball (spherical) valve rather than an S-valve. Key advantages:

  • Lower pumping force (the ball rotates rather than cutting with sharp edges)
  • Reduced mechanical wear
  • Straightforward replacement of the complete assembly

Replacing the entire spherical valve mechanism: 1–2 working days. Control system calibration is required after replacement.

Parts Availability — Our Approach

PHS Magnum coordinates Cifa parts orders directly with the Italian distributor. Standard items (pistons, filters, oils, sensors): 7–14 working days delivery. Larger hydraulic sub-assemblies: 2–3 weeks. Carbotech sections: 2–6 weeks (made to order).

Strategy: for planned Cifa inspections, we order parts in advance to keep machine downtime to a minimum.

Frequently Asked Questions

We cover the full Cifa range: Carbotech boom pumps (K-Series — e.g. K31L, K47H, K50L, K60H), boomless line pumps (PC, PCL), and truck-mixer pumps (Energya, EYTRACK). K-Series designation: the number indicates vertical reach in metres; the suffix L/H denotes construction class. We service everything from older aluminium-boom generations through to the latest CFRP Carbotech models.

We repair damage to the metal fittings and mounting brackets. The carbon-fibre boom structure itself cannot be welded — a cracked section must be replaced in its entirety, with the new section supplied by the manufacturer in Italy. Lead time for a new section: 2–6 weeks. Removal of the old section and installation of the new one in our workshop: 1–2 working days.

The Cifa spherical valve uses a rotating ball with a through-bore, operated hydraulically. Compared with an S-valve: it requires less force to open and close, produces less edge wear (no sharp cutting geometry), and is replaced as a complete unit. The trade-off: higher replacement cost (the entire ball-and-mechanism assembly) and specialist tooling required for removal.

Carbotech is Cifa's patented carbon-fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP) boom technology. Advantages: the boom is 30–40% lighter than a steel equivalent, allowing a greater reach for the same outrigger footprint and easier manoeuvring. The downside: welding is not possible, making repairs more expensive — a cracked section must be replaced in full (cost depends on section length and is quoted individually).

Cifa parts are sourced primarily from Italy (Senago, near Milan — the manufacturer's headquarters). Standard items: 7–14 working days. Specialist components (boom sections, larger sub-assemblies): 2–6 weeks. Availability is lower than Putzmeister, but for planned maintenance we order in advance. PHS Magnum has a direct relationship with the Cifa distributor.

The most frequent issues are: rubber piston wear (common to all pump brands), worn concrete cylinder bores, boom angle sensor and CAN-bus control faults, and coolant leaks from the water pump seals. Less commonly: cracked Carbotech boom mounting brackets (the CFRP itself rarely fails; the metal fittings fail more often) and wear of the spherical valve ball.

Replacing the entire spherical valve assembly takes 1–2 working days: disassembly of the hydraulic mechanism, extraction of the ball, installation of the new unit, and calibration of the control system. Repairing the existing ball (for minor wear) is rarely cost-effective — replacement is generally the better option. The cost of a new ball varies by pump model and is quoted individually.

The most common causes of reduced output are worn rubber pistons, an eroded concrete cylinder bore, and a leaking or worn spherical valve that allows concrete to bypass. We begin with a visual inspection of the pistons and valve ball, then check hydraulic system pressure and seal condition. Piston inspection and replacement can be done on-site; cylinder reconditioning and valve replacement require the workshop.

Yes. We work on all generations — from older steel- and aluminium-boom machines through to the latest Carbotech CFRP models. On older construction types, weld repairs to mounting points and metal components are perfectly feasible, unlike CFRP sections, which cannot be welded and must be replaced if cracked. We tailor the scope of work to the specific model and its condition.

It depends on the overall condition and age of the machine. If the chassis, hydraulics and remaining boom sections are sound, replacing one damaged section is usually far cheaper than a new pump, despite the delivery lead time from Italy. If the Carbotech is more than 15 years old and several sections show UV degradation, we carry out a full assessment and present a diagnosis with a recommendation. Ask for a quote.
