Most Commonly Replaced Concrete Pump Parts

1. Rubber Pistons

Rubber pistons are the most frequently replaced component in a concrete pump. They work in direct contact with the concrete mix and wear progressively.

Types and sizes held in stock:

SizeApplicationTypical service life
80 mmPutzmeister BSF/M, Mecbo P420,000–30,000 m³
90 mmCifa K-Line, Schwing S-Line25,000–40,000 m³
100 mmPutzmeister BSF 2100, larger Schwing models30,000–45,000 m³
125 mmHigh-output pumpsTo order

Signs of worn pistons:

  • Grey or milky hydraulic oil (concrete has entered the hydraulic circuit)
  • Reduced pumping output (pressure fails to reach rated level)
  • Increased energy consumption for the same throughput

Replacement procedure: 4–8 hours (pumping block removal, cylinder cleaning, new piston fitting, start-up and functional test).

2. Concrete Cylinders

Concrete cylinders work in conjunction with the pistons. They wear significantly more slowly — typically lasting three to five times longer than the pistons.

When to replace:

  • Clearance between piston and cylinder exceeds the manufacturer’s tolerance
  • Scoring or cracking on the cylinder bore surface
  • Pistons wearing out considerably faster than normal

Sizes available in stock: 80, 90, 100 mm. Other sizes — within 48 hours of order.

3. Pumping Block Seal Kits

Complete seal kits for the pumping block: O-rings, sealing rings, flange gaskets.

We always replace the seal kit when changing pistons — fitting a new piston against old seals is only half the work.

4. Hydraulic Filters

Filter types:

  • Pressure filter (high-pressure) — replace every 500 h
  • Return filter — replace every 500 h
  • Tank breather filter element — every 250 h or at each oil change

Hydraulic oil: HVLP 46 (standard). All-season grade (to −20 °C). Change every 2,000 h or in line with laboratory oil analysis.

5. S-Valve (S-tube valve)

The S-valve is the heart of the pump — it switches the pumping direction between cylinders. Typical service life: 50,000–80,000 m³ of concrete, considerably less with dry mixes.

Signs of a worn S-valve:

  • Noise during operation (banging)
  • Concrete failing to reach the pumping block on direction change
  • Concrete leaking past the valve seal

6. Boom Components

  • Pivot pins and slide bushings
  • Hydraulic cylinder seals for the boom
  • Slewing-ring bearings for the column

Quick Fault Finder: Symptom → Cause → Part

Before ordering a part, it helps to match the symptom to the likely cause. The table below speeds up diagnosis when arranging a pump repair:

SymptomProbable causeComponent to inspect / replace
Grey or milky hydraulic oilConcrete entering through worn pistonRubber pistons + pumping block seals
Loss of pumping outputWorn pistons or cylinder clearancePistons, concrete cylinders
Noise and banging on direction changeWorn S-valveS-valve (S-tube) + seal
Concrete leaking at pumping blockWorn flange gasketsPumping block seal kit
Play or vibration in boom armsWorn pins, bushings, slewing-ringBoom components
Oil overheating, dirty circuitBlocked or overdue filtersHydraulic filters, oil change

If symptoms are ambiguous or the pump is approaching its next inspection date, combine the parts replacement with a TDT inspection — replacing a pressure-bearing component already triggers a spot inspection under TDT regulations.

Frequently Asked Questions

We keep in permanent stock: rubber pistons (80/90 mm for Putzmeister, Cifa, Schwing, Mecbo pumps), concrete cylinders (70–90 mm), piston rod seals, hydraulic O-rings, hydraulic oil filters, and full seal kits for the pumping block.

Standard parts not held in stock: 24–48 hours from order (suppliers in Poland and Germany). Specialist or older-model parts: 3–7 working days. When arranging a repair we check availability in advance.

Yes. We sell spare parts both as part of a service and for self-installation. We provide OEM reference numbers and compatible aftermarket alternatives.

Rubber pistons typically last 20,000–40,000 m³ of concrete. Dry mixes and sharp aggregate can reduce service life by up to 50%. The tell-tale sign of piston wear is concrete contaminating the hydraulic oil (oil turns grey).

Measure with a calliper or specialist gauge. Cylinder wear causes concrete mix to leak into the pumping block and accelerates piston wear. A key symptom: pistons are wearing out noticeably faster than normal.

We offer both OEM parts (Putzmeister, Cifa, Schwing) and proven compatible aftermarket alternatives. Aftermarket parts are significantly cheaper at comparable quality for standard applications. For TDT inspections and safety-critical applications we recommend OEM.

The key parameters are piston diameter (e.g. 80, 90, 100 mm) and the pump make and model, because cylinder bore dimensions vary between manufacturers. The safest approach is to use the OEM part number or the pump's data plate. Give us the make, model and diameter or reference number and we will source the correct OEM part or a compatible alternative.

Both. We can supply a part with OEM reference numbers for self-installation, or carry out the replacement in our workshop at Chorula. A piston change including cylinder cleaning and functional test typically takes a few hours; we always replace the pumping block seal kit at the same time — fitting a new piston against worn seals is only half a job.

Worn pistons primarily show as grey hydraulic oil and reduced output pressure. A worn S-valve produces characteristic noise and banging when the pumping direction switches, and concrete leaks past the valve seal. If symptoms overlap we diagnose both components, as a worn S-valve accelerates piston wear.
